Don’t Be Unresponsive to Responsive Web Design

The proliferation of mobile devices has changed the way people interact with the world around them. The last 12 months has seen the web move forward at an incredible rate. Among the many changes, mobile web browsing has overtaken desktop as the device of first choice for internet users. There should be no doubt that we live in a mobile-first world today.

Internet Usage Worldwide - Desktop vs Mobile & Tablet

According to a latest mobile trends study released by Google, nearly 40% of people search only on a smartphone in an average day as they look to meet immediate needs. Also, according to Google, more Google searches are happening on smartphones than computers.

In November, 2014, Google announced that it was boosting the rankings of mobile-friendly web pages on mobile search results. As a result of a shift towards a mobile-friendly Internet, sites that were not mobile-friendly began to rank even lower than before in search engine results pages (SERPs).

Since then and in spite of forewarnings from the industry as well as published statistics, many still have not responded well to a basic and obvious demand – responsive web design.

Google also warns marketers that if you’re not making an attempt to reach customers on mobile you’re missing a quarter of your potential audience.

There is no getting away for it. Google is going to favor websites that are optimized for people using mobile and smartphone devices. Those websites are typically the ones that have incorporated a mobile responsive design and will therefore rank higher in SERPs.

Yet, according to some, only 30% of small businesses have mobile-friendly websites and the number of those who still have antiquated websites is as high as 60 percent.

Having a Responsive Website Design brings with it improved search engine rankings, faster page rendering speeds, reduced page entry bounce rates, better site usability and improved customer experience.

All well and good you say or maybe you could care less about page bounce rates and the like, but as a business owner, what you do care about and is most important for you is your bottom line.
